Writing on Art
Hugh wrote many catalogue essays when Director of the Ikon Gallery and continued to write about art when he could. By the early 1990’s he had moved to London and was under less pressure from his main work as a screenwriter. This led to a period of considerable activity as an art writer between about 1997 and 2002.
He wrote reviews for various magazines, but his main outlet became Contemporary Visual Arts, then a bi-monthly under the editorship of Keith Patrick. Hugh contributed some thirty reviews of between 500 and 1000 words, mainly on solo shows by British contemporary artists, and some ten articles based on interviews. He wrote three of these for the Independent on Chris Burden, Carl Andre and Panamarenko. Rather than “transcribed interviews” Hugh preferred to use a recording as a basis for a prose piece.
He has written catalogue essays for artists (including Trevor Sutton, George Blacklock, Noel Forster and Siân Bowen) and contributed to books about artist Tony O’Malley (Scolar Press 1996) and choreographer Rosemary Butcher - noted for her collaborative work with artists (Middlesex University Press 2005).
NOTE: Essays and reviews due to be uploaded soon on all the following artists, except where a link is indicated. Repeated names mean more than one piece will be available.
